Hibernians claim football's unofficial world title
Hibernians defeated Preston North End 2-1 in one of football's earliest attempts to crown a world champion. The match, staged at Hibernian Park, was officially billed by the Scottish and English football associations as the "Association Football Championship of the World", with Hibernians representing Scotland as Scottish Cup winners. Surprisingly, England chose Preston North End rather than FA Cup holders Aston Villa to contest the match. Captain James McGhee gave Hibernians the lead before James McLaren added a second, while John Goodall scored Preston's only goal. Although no official world title existed at the time, victory saw Hibernians hailed as the "Champions of the World" in contemporary reports.
