Mexico Stun Brazil to Win Their First FIFA Trophy
Mexico enjoyed one of the greatest days in their football history by defeating reigning world champions Brazil 4-3 to win the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup. In front of a passionate home crowd at the Estadio Azteca, El Tri raced into a two-goal lead before Brazil fought back to level the match early in the second half. Miguel Zepeda restored Mexico's advantage almost immediately, before Rafael Márquez's superb pass released Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who skipped past his marker and rifled home what proved to be the winning goal. Brazil pulled one back moments later, but Mexico held firm to secure their first FIFA trophy and one of the most memorable victories in the nation's football history.
