Liverpool became England's first top-flight club with a shirt sponsor
Liverpool became the first English professional club to sign a shirt sponsorship agreement after they signed a two-year partnership with Japanese electronics company Hitachi. The deal, worth around £100,000, allowed Hitachi's logo to appear on Liverpool's shirts in domestic matches that were not televised. The deal transformed football's commercial landscape, paving the way for shirt sponsorship to become one of the sport's most valuable revenue streams.
