The Bundesliga is born, launching a new chapter in German football
German football entered a new era as the Bundesliga was officially created at the DFB convention in Dortmund. After decades of regional competitions, West Germany approved a unified professional league, with 103 of the 129 delegates voting in favour of its introduction. A qualification system was established to determine the first 16 clubs, based on performances in league and cup competitions over the previous decade. Among the founding members were Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, while Bayern Munich would not join the Bundesliga until 1965 and Bayer Leverkusen until 1979.
