From prisoner of war to Manchester City hero - Bert Trautmann signs
Manchester City made one of the most controversial signings in English football history when they signed Bert Trautmann. A former German paratrooper and prisoner of war, Trautmann’s arrival at Maine Road came just four years after the end of the Second World War. The decision to sign him sparked anger and protests from sections of the public, with some supporters struggling to accept a German player representing an English club so soon after the conflict. However, Manchester City believed they had discovered an exceptional goalkeeper and were willing to give him the opportunity to prove himself. He made 545 appearances for Manchester City and became immortalised in the 1956 FA Cup Final, when he continued playing despite suffering a broken neck during the match.
