Arsenal’s World XI: The night 11 nationalities lined up for the Gunners
Arsenal defeated Hamburg 2-1 in the Champions League in a match remembered for an unusual piece of football history. After Kolo Touré was forced off through injury, Justin Hoyte replaced him to create a starting XI featuring players from 11 different nations. The side included Germany’s Jens Lehmann, Ivory Coast’s Emmanuel Eboué, England’s Hoyte, France’s William Gallas, Brazil’s Gilberto Silva, Spain’s Cesc Fà bregas and the Netherlands’ Robin van Persie. The remarkable combination lasted for 42 minutes before van Persie was replaced by Brazilian striker Júlio Baptista.
