Belgium win Olympic gold after Czechoslovakia walk off in protest
Belgium won the 1920 Olympic football gold medal after Czechoslovakia abandoned the final in Antwerp in protest at the referee’s decisions. Belgium made a flying start when Robert Coppée converted a penalty after only six minutes, and Henri Larnoe doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 30th minute. Just before half-time, Czech defender Karel Steiner was sent off, and the Czechoslovakian players immediately left the field in protest at what they believed were biased refereeing decisions. They refused to return, and the match was abandoned with Belgium leading 2-0. Czechoslovakia later lodged an official complaint, arguing that both Belgian goals had resulted from incorrect decisions by the referee and his assistant, although the protest was rejected.
