Brighton’s first European night ends in shock Europa League defeat to AEK Athens
Brighton & Hove Albion’s historic European debut ended in disappointment as AEK Athens stunned Roberto De Zerbi’s side with a 3-2 Europa League group stage victory at the Amex Stadium. AEK opened the scoring through Djibril Sidibé after Brighton struggled without injured captain Lewis Dunk, before Joao Pedro levelled from the penalty spot after VAR intervention. However, AEK refused to be beaten. Mijat Gaćinović restored the visitors’ lead before substitute Ezequiel Ponce sealed victory late on, finishing a quick counter-attack after Brighton were caught out defensively. The result ended AEK Athens’ 46-year wait for a victory against English opposition and spoiled what should have been a landmark European occasion for Brighton.
