Derby County and Blackburn Rovers produced one of the most remarkable matches in Football League history, with Derby winning 8-5 in a 13-goal thriller. John Goodall scored a hat-trick for the Rams, while Jack Southworth replied with three for Blackburn in what remains the only 8-5 scoreline ever recorded in the English top flight. Despite beginning the season with eight goals, Derby went on to struggle badly, eventually finishing second-bottom of the 12-team league. In that era there was no automatic relegation; clubs in the lower positions had to seek re-election to remain in the Football League.
