Spain defeat England to win the Women’s World Cup
England’s hopes of winning a first Women’s World Cup title were ended by Spain in the 2023 final. Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game as Spain secured a 1-0 victory in Sydney. Spain controlled much of the contest and took the lead in the first half when captain Olga Carmona finished after Lucy Bronze lost possession in midfield. England responded after the break with Lauren James and Chloe Kelly introduced from the bench, but Spain continued to create chances and restricted the Lionesses’ attacking threat. Mary Earps kept England in the match, saving brilliantly from Jenni Hermoso’s second-half penalty after a lengthy VAR review. Despite a late push and 14 minutes of stoppage time, England could not find an equaliser as Spain became world champions for the first time.

Manchester United’s Anfield home game against Arsenal
Manchester United played a rare “home” fixture away from Old Trafford in 1971, hosting Arsenal at Liverpool’s Anfield. The match was part of a punishment after hooligans threw knives into the away section at the end of the previous season. United fell behind to Frank McLintock’s goal but recovered to win 3-1 and move top of the First Division.
Johnny Doyle’s bizarre red card for hitting the referee
Celtic winger Johnny Doyle received one of the strangest red cards in Scottish football history when he was sent off after accidentally hitting the referee with the ball during a match against Ayr United in 1977. The decision was later overturned by the SFA after Doyle was cleared of any wrongdoing.
