When Nigeria toured Britain and defeated Marine without boots
Nigeria’s national team produced one of football’s most remarkable early international tour stories in 1949 when they beat Marine Crosby 5-2 in Liverpool while playing almost entirely barefoot. Despite concerns about the heavy leather ball, the Nigerians produced a dazzling performance to win 5-2. Marine captain Len Carney later joked that “their feet were harder than our boots,” while supporters humorously urged the Marine players to remove their own boots in the hope it might improve their play. After the final whistle, jubilant spectators carried the victorious Nigerians shoulder-high to the dressing room, and Marine donated the entire £200 gate receipt to the Nigerian Football Association.
