Arsenal Win First Competitive ABBA Penalty Shoot-Out
The 2017 Community Shield became the first competitive match in England to use the experimental ABBA penalty shoot-out system. Arsenal lifted the trophy after defeating Chelsea 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Victor Moses had given Premier League champions Chelsea the lead before Pedro was sent off for a reckless challenge on Mohamed Elneny. From the resulting free-kick, debutant Sead Kolašinac headed Arsenal level to force a shoot-out. Under the new ABBA format, Chelsea's hopes disappeared when Thibaut Courtois blazed over and record signing Álvaro Morata dragged his penalty wide, allowing Olivier Giroud to convert the decisive kick. Although introduced in an attempt to make penalty shoot-outs fairer, the ABBA system lasted just one season before being scrapped.
