Football glory for England
England won the FIFA World Cup for the first time with a 4-2 extra-time victory over West Germany at Wembley. In front of a packed Wembley crowd, Geoff Hurst cancelled out Helmut Haller's opener before Martin Peters looked to have won the trophy, only for Wolfgang Weber to force extra time with seconds remaining. The final, though, is forever remembered for Hurst's controversial second goal, which struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing down on - or over - the line. After the goal was awarded following consultation between referee Gottfried Dienst and linesman Tofiq Bahramov, Hurst completed the first hat-trick in a World Cup final with a stunning late strike, sealing one of football's most iconic victories.
