The first top-flight Merseyside derby belongs to Everton
Everton defeated Liverpool 3-0 in the first top-flight Merseyside derby. 44,000 spectators - including the Lord Mayor of Liverpool - crammed into Everton’s ground for the first league game between the two sides, with the occasion described as a major civic event. Everton, who were top of the First Division at the time, proved far too strong. Tom McInnes headed home after 11 minutes to score the first ever goal in a league Merseyside derby, and further strikes from Alex Latta and John Bell secured a comfortable 3-0 victory. One of the most striking details of the match was the make-up of Liverpool’s side. Despite representing a club from the heart of the city, only one player on the pitch was a Scouser - Harry Bradshaw - while the rest of the Liverpool team was composed entirely of Scots.

The day royalty came to Turf Moor
Turf Moor made football history when Prince Albert Victor attended Burnley’s friendly against Bolton Wanderers while visiting the town to open a new hospital. The match ended in a 4-3 defeat for Burnley, but the occasion became far more significant for its royal milestone.
