FC Porto founded
Futebol Clube do Porto was founded by António Nicolau de Almeida, a local port wine merchant whose trips to England inspired him to bring football to northern Portugal. At a time when football was still in its infancy in Portugal, the creation of Foot-Ball Club do Porto represented an important step in spreading the game beyond Lisbon. Among their many achievements, Porto remain the only Portuguese club to win five consecutive league titles, accomplishing the feat between 1995 and 1999.
