Portsmouth and Reading produce the Premier League’s greatest goal-fest
Few expected Portsmouth versus Reading to become a Premier League classic, but Fratton Park witnessed an extraordinary 11-goal thriller that still stands as the highest-scoring match in Premier League history. Benjani opened the scoring, and then added a superb second with a powerful solo strike. Reading pulled one back through Stephen Hunt, but the real chaos arrived after the interval. Dave Kitson equalised only for Portsmouth to respond immediately. Hermann Hreiðarsson restored the lead, and Benjani completed his first English hat-trick. Portsmouth then appeared to kill the game through Niko Kranjčar, but the goals kept coming. Shane Long scored for Reading, Sean Davis and Muntari converted a late penalty to make it 7-3. And there was still time for a Nicky Shorey stoppage-time strike
