Renton thrown out of Scottish Football League after just four league games
Renton were suspended from the Scottish Football League after only four matches. The Scottish Football Association expelled the club for alleged professionalism and other breaches, with their league record later expunged. The club, one of the strongest sides in Scotland during the late nineteenth century, had already attracted the attention of the SFA for participating in a controversial benefit match, but matters became even worse when Renton then played a friendly against a team widely believed to be a thinly disguised version of St Bernard’s, which was itself in dispute with the authorities. The SFA reacted swiftly, suspending Renton. Rather than accept the decision quietly, Renton launched a remarkable counterattack. Which Renton won. But it was too late and their results were expunged
